Spotlight on Emma, Lochaber Environmental Group

Protecting and restoring our Climate is important for a multitude of reasons; it is as much about protecting our environment, as it is allowing ourselves to thrive in that environment! Across Lochaber, Lochaber Environmental Group (LEG) are promoting this philosophy for the benefit of the local communities by helping to advance the knowledge of residents in the study of the environment and sustainability, facilitating training, and sharing advice & information.

Women are a fundamental driver of the brilliant work LEG do, so we are delighted to share the spotlight on Emma Walters, Development Officer for Lochaber Environmental Group.

Read on to find what inspires Emma, and how she utilises this to accelerate progress towards a climate ready Lochaber.

How did you get involved in Lochaber Environmental Group?

I was the Active Travel Project Officer for the final year of the Climate Challenge Fund ‘Low Carbon Lochaber’ project at Lochaber Environmental Group, and from here I become lead on the Active Travel Project as a Development Officer.

What makes you feel inspired?

Other people, especially people on bikes!

How does your organisation work to #InspireInclusion?

By helping people overcome barriers to climate friendly lifestyle changes. My project helps people to overcome barriers to cycling, whatever they may be.

How can we get more women and gender-diverse people involved in local climate action?

I think women are very involved, it would probably help if an equal number of men got involved! In answer to the question though, I think continue what we do best- positive support for community groups and networks to enable them to grow “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”.

Emma’s vision for Lochaber is one in which cycling and active travel are a fundamental component of life! To achieve this, all sectors of Lochaber’s society needs to be represented in discussions around barriers preventing an active lifestyle, #InspireInclusion.

If you are in or around Lochaber and want to live a more active lifestyle, get in contact with Emma & LEG now!

Join us throughout the rest of March as we celebrate more inspirational women trail blazing climate action across the Highlands in many different ways.
