Highlands & Islands
Community Climate Action Fund

The Highlands & Islands Climate Hub is delighted to offer its members small grants for new community organisations or to launch a new climate action project. The Fund is available to existing and emerging community groups who are members of the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub.

We have a small funding pot available for funding applications up to £1,000. Our Climate Action Fund opens once a quarter to applications as follows:

Funding Round 1

  • Open - 1st May 2026

  • Close - 31st May 2026

Funding Round 2

  • Open - 1st August 2026

  • Close - 31st August 2026

Funding Round 3

  • Open - 1st November 2026

  • Close - 30th November 2026

Our funding is a small grant which is designed to either kickstart a climate action project in your community or carry out community engagement around climate change. We particularly encourage new groups or organisations who have not previously engaged in climate change themed projects to come forward for funding. For this reason we are unable to offer our funding as a contribution to a larger project.

Projects funded must be able to complete and report on the impact of their project in 2027. We will ask for an interim update on any funded project in January 2027.

To achieve the overall vision, aims and objectives of the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub we will prioritise projects which:

  • Aim to create long-term change.

  • Build the skills and capacity of groups or organisations and communities.

  • Support and encourage collaborative working across groups or organisations, communities and areas.

  • Encourage sustainability through reusing, recycling and upcycling goods and products.

  • Encourage climate action and a just transition

  • Mitigate climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce environmental impact

  • Help communities adapt to and build resilience to climate change

  • Protect or enhance local biodiversity through conservation and promotion

We appreciate our funding has become competitive due to the wider funding landscape however, we always aim to fund as many community organisations as possible. We understand an unsuccessful funding application can be frustrating, but we would always advise getting in touch with our team if there is anything you feel unsure about.

Our Funding Criteria

  1. Funding is available up to a maximum of £1,000 per project.

  2. Projects must be based within the Highland, Orkney or Shetland Local Authority areas.

  3. Projects must be as sustainable as possible - please note we will not fund any single use items.

  4. The funding is intended to be for development of a climate action project in your local community.

  5. The Fund can be used to cover the costs of delivering a project and/or to carry out community consultation research around a project idea.

  6. Successful applicants can request additional Hub staff time to support with the design, development and delivery of the funded project.

  7. If your project will seek to directly employ staff, you must pay the Real Living Wage.

  8. Successful applicants can access the Hub’s resource bank of equipment which will be discussed as part of the application process.

  9. It is essential that the Hub receives adequate reporting and evidence of spend of the grant. Failure to provide reporting will result in no further funding application being carried forward until reporting has been received.

  10. Your organisation should have its own bank account and you must have a committee with at least 3 unrelated people.

  11. We operate on a quarterly basis, with our funding opening on the 1st of each quarter. We expect our funding rounds to be competitive and it is unlikely we will be able to fund every application we receive. Please note if you are applying for a one off event, we may not have a decision on your application before time elapses on your event.

Your project must complete 2027 with an interim update provided in January 2027.

*PLEASE NOTE: Funding is only available for member organisation of the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub. If you are not already a member organisation, please indicate ‘no’ on our funding application form which will then lead you to complete a membership application to be eligible for Climate Action funding.

Want to be involved in the decision making process?

We are looking to recruit member organisations of the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub to form a funding panel for our Climate Action Fund to help guide the projects we fund throughout Highland, Orkney and Shetland.

Time Commitment

The funding panel we are recruiting in 2026 will decided on 3 separate funding rounds.

You will be required to read the funding applications received in each round, the level of application we receive may vary in each round.

A funding panel call will be held after each funding round has closed for the panel to meet and make decisions on what we fund.

The time commitment may vary throughout each funding round.

Eligibility

This opportunity is for members only of the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub.

Making an application to the Climate Action Fund does not prohibit you from joining our members panel.

If you would like to be a part of our funding panel, but also wish to make an application to our Climate Action Fund, we would require you to excuse yourself from the decision making process on your own funding application.

You will be guided through the process by our Senior Project Officer Bethany - who operates our Climate Action Fund. You do not need to have experience in making any funding decisions previously. If you are interested in joining our members panel to make decisions on where our funding is allocated, please reach out to Senior Project Officer Bethany on the button below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Examples of Previously Funded Projects

Lochaber Environmental Group

The Highlands & Islands Climate Hub’s Climate Action Fund supported an Outdoor Gear Repair Café and Zip Care & Repair Workshop led by Lochaber Environmental Group at the Fort William Mountain Festival, reaching both local people and visitors to Lochaber.

Fourteen attendees brought over 20 items for repair, with most successfully fixed on the day, while workshop participants gained practical skills to maintain and extend the life of their outdoor gear.

The project increased awareness of repair and reuse, supported volunteers and resources, and encouraged a more practical approach to reducing waste within the community.

Velo City

The Climate Action Fund supported a successful funding application from Velo City to carry out bike maintenance classes in Inverness.

Across four maintenance classes, participants reported a 100% increase in confidence across all topics covered. Sessions were practical and hands-on, encouraging discussion, problem solving and a better understanding of how bikes work.

Participants left feeling more confident to carry out their own repairs, with positive feedback highlighting the value of being able to ask questions and learn through doing.

South Ronaldsay and Burray Development Trust

The Climate Action Fund supported South Ronaldsay and Burray Development Trust to install a solar PV and battery system to support the reopening and long-term sustainability of the Tomb of the Eagles Visitor Centre.

The system helps meet increased energy demand as the site returns to full operation, maximising solar use during the busy tourist season and supporting off-peak charging in winter.

This has improved energy resilience and reduced fuel costs and strengthened the site’s carbon performance in a remote rural setting reliant on electric heating.
