Communities, climate action and the General Election.

As members of the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub, we appreciate that while considering where to place your vote at the upcoming general election, you’ll have questions around policies, candidates, boundaries and what identification to bring along to ensure your vote is cast.

We encourage you to ensure you’re prepped to place that all important vote so we’ve pulled together the below information which we hope is helpful and a resource you can share with your community in the coming days.

  • Understand your boundaries.

There have been some boundary changes ahead of the 2024 election. Our Highlands and Islands constituencies are as follows:

Orkney and Shetland

Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross

Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire

Argyll, Bute and South Lochaber

Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey

For those in Highland, the Highland Council have created a short video clip to explain the boundary changes.

  • Get to know the candidates in your constituency.

There are five constituencies that make up the geographical patch of the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub. On this website, you can input your post code and understand more about the candidates in your constituency, read about their manifesto and contact them or their party with your questions ahead of the election.

  • Attend a Hustings event.

These events are an ideal place to directly ask candidates in your constituency specifically on their climate ambitions. Look out for Hustings events being advertised via local newspapers and on social media.

  • Directly contact candidates and compare manifestos

Can’t find a Hustings event? Email the candidates in your constituency and ask your questions. You can share the responses with your community and/or encourage them to contact candidates themselves.

The BBC news website has created a handy tool which allows us to compare party manifestos and allows us to drill down specifically on environmental policies as well as other topics which affect our communities. Take a look here.

  • Ensure you are prepared for election day

Poll cards are in the process of being posted out and will clearly indicate the name of your constituency and where you should attend to cast your vote on Thursday 4th July.

Please note that when you go to vote, you’ll need to provide photo ID, the accepted list of ID can be found here.
