Transition Lab Ting

  • Orkney Research and Innovation Campus The Robert Rendall Building, Stromness KW16 3AN United Kingdom (map)

Our lifestyle has changed greatly since World War II – and with it our use of fossil fuels. Oil consumption alone has trebled since 1965. The change must now be reversed, and solutions found locally as well as nationally – so each community needs to find its own solutions.

Heriot-Watt University are researching the Transition Lab process. One of the first Transition Labs is about children’s travel to school, aimed to stimulate ideas to reduce transport. For this, they’ve developed a Transitioneering Kids Programme. Before the programme launch, the Transition Lab Ting has to assess it. The Ting is a community jury which hears the case, the expert evidence, and the impact statements of participants; it then decides whether the plans should go ahead or be reviewed. This afternoon we’ll hear the actual Ting for the first Transition Lab for the local primary school net zero transport scheme.
