Orkney Climate Fair looks forward to welcoming climate concious locals!
The Orkney Climate Fair is set to take place on Saturday 7th February from 11am – 5pm within King Street Halls, Kirkwall.
The Fair, organised by The Highlands and Islands Climate Hub is a celebration of all things community climate action. The event was originally due to take place within the Highlands and Islands Climate Festival in early October 2025 however stormy weather meant plans were to change. Organisers are pleased that those involved in participating in the fair are available for the new date on the 7th February and have even secured additional activities.
The event will be made up of several activities with something to suit all ages and interests. A collection of information, craft and retail stalls will allow attendees to understand more about projects in Orkney which actively tackle the climate crisis and how members of the public can support them to do this.
Family activities will be led by Fiamma Creative Club and will include an interactive Climate Storytelling session for children aged 2-6 years and their grown ups as well as craft sessions for older children and grown ups. At these sessions, attendees are invited to make a Zine about finding joy in Nature or to make something from old kitchen roll tubes and various other household objects that are usually popped in the recycling bin.
The Orkney Repair Café will host a mini repair session where attendees can bring along broken household items to have them repaired and avoid landfill. They’ll also be advertising how the Repair Café works and how people can get involved should they wish.
Orkney Fair Trade Group will demonstrate to attendees just how much textile waste Orkney produces with an installation piece set to make people think twice about how they use textiles in their every day lives.
The day will conclude with a workshop led by Community Development Officer for Orkney, Francesca Perotti. Members of the public are encouraged to have their say on how Orkney can embrace a stronger circular economy where resources are reused, shared, repaired, and regenerated to benefit people, place, and the planet. Book your place at the workshop now to avoid disappointment.
Community Development Officer for Orkney, Francesca Perotti said:
“I’m so looking forward to welcoming those exhibiting at the Orkney Climate Fair and of course, members of the public. This event has been a long time in the planning and I’m so looking forward to sharing with the community the wide range of action Orcadians are taking to combat the climate emergency. As part of my role, I lead the Orkney Circular Economy Network which aims to raise awareness of repairing, reusing and sharing items before disposing of them. This event is not designed to shame anyone into looking inward at how they live their lives, it’s about sharing knowledge on what’s available locally to give people options to consider before sending items to landfill.
The afternoon workshop will invite people to have an open conversation about how Orkney can embrace a stronger circular economy. Everyone is welcome so please don’t be shy. You don’t need to be a community leader or a policymaker to take part. If you’ve ever run waste to the tip or wheeled your bin out for collection, you’ve already engaged with the system, so anyone who is a passionate resident is encouraged to sign up. The workshop will offer attendees a space to connect, reflect and perhaps commit to next steps. And there’s plenty refreshments to keep us going!”
