Community Climate Action at Christmas
The Christmas period is the perfect time to take a look at how we can be more sustainable, and inspire the people around us to do the same. In this Blog, I will be looking at some of the things our members have been doing in the lead up to Christmas to promote climate action in their communities.
Social Enterprise Scotland have put together this handy gift buying guide #BuySocialScotland which features hundreds of presents with a purpose from Scottish Social Enterprises. Including our members The Highland Weigh CIC and Darach Social Croft.
If you would like to add your companies products to the Buy Social Scotland directory, you can do so here.
In Ullapool, The Community Trust and Ullapool Unpacked teamed together to run their 3rd Re-Love Clothing Fair. The event was a great success with 87 people submitting items to sell, over 100 sales and £2000 of second hand clothing sold. The idea of the fair was to promote buying second hand, raise awareness of fast fashion, provide a selling platform for local people and to bring people together in these winter months.
Buying second hand clothing is a fantastic way to be more sustainable, save money and find some unexpected treasures both for yourself, and as gifts.
The Thurso Community Development Trust held a Christmas swap on the 25th of Novemebr. People dropped off items of clothing and Christmas decorations they no longer needed, to be able to swap and find something new.
Swapping allows you to aquire something new to you, save money and increase the life of items.
Its nice to change up your style and have new items to enjoy at christmas, and this is a great way to do that!
According to the buisnesswaste.co.uk, The waste generated at Christmas goes up by 30% compared to the waste created during the rest of the year. This is pretty staggering!
To tackle this, the Lochaber Environmental Group are running a Session with Liz Macmaster from Stronbra Produce, all about using up Christmas leftovers.
This year, I am trying to have a sustainable and festive christmas time for me and my family. Some of the ways we have been doing this are…
Buying gifts second hand and from small local buisness
Using resuable fabric wraps instead of paper
Taking part in climate action in my community
Taking reusable cups to get a hot chocolate for a wintery walk
Buying food locally and seasonally where we can
Draft proofing our house for the winter months
Whether its reducing waste and consumption at home, or engaging with community organisations to take climate action. We can all make a difference and enjoy a sustainable Christmas this year.
