The Highlands and Islands Climate Festival

Working Group 2023

We’re thrilled to bring back the super popular climate festival. Bigger and better for 2023.

In February 2023 we hosted an online meeting with participants of the 2022 Highland Climate Festival and Orkney Climate Festival.

We discussed the successes and challenges of 2022 and here’s what happened…

Highlands and Islands Climate Festival

We were thrilled to be joined by a range of participants from the 2022 celebrations to get to work on the 2023 format. Together, we’ll shape what the 2023 celebration will look like and work together with community representation from Shetland to Skye to make this year’s celebration, bigger and better.

There was a flurry of excitement as we discussed possible events, structure and community celebrations while also engaging in serious discussion around how technology can support our events reach a wider audience so that folks in Lochaber can enjoy an Orcadian film screening without leaving their home office!

See our Miro board below which higlights the topics we discussed.

In April 2023, Hub Manager Joan Lawrie prepared the 2023 Community Brief which you can read below. This document includes the latest information including important dates for your diaries in terms of funding so make sure to check it out!

What was the outcome of the initial working group meeting?

The working group met on Thursday 16th February to share opinions and ideas for the 2023 climate celebrations. It was incredible to hear so many brilliant suggestions from a huge range of communities.

It was agreed at the initial meeting that in 2023, the festival will take place over a longer period of time, will have loose themes to offer inspiration to those who would like to take part should they need it and that the celebration will take place throughout September 2023 to coincide with Scottish Climate Week and the Climate Fringe Festival.

Those were the firm agreements, all other suggestions will need continued, careful consideration but everyone involved is really excited to make September 2023 a jam packed month of climate action celebrations!

What happened in 2022?

There were two climate celebrations in 2022. The Highland Climate Festival and the Orkney Climate Festival.

This was the case for several reasons and both events were incredibly warmly received by attendees and partners. The Highland Climate Festival was a partnership with Highland Adapts and the Orkney Climate Festival was a partnership with the Orkney International Science Festival.
