Just a few days to go until the Orkney Climate Festival

The Orkney Climate Festival this year will take place from the 1st to the 7th September and will run alongside, and in collaboration with, the popular International Orkney Science Festival. This is the first Orkney Climate Festival to take place and we are delighted to say that there are over 50 events taking place across Orkney with a focus on the environment, sustainability or climate action throughout the 7 days.

The Festival is comprised of numerous community groups across Orkney hosting events for their communities that either celebrate the fantastic work they are doing, engage communities in taking climate action, or raise awareness of climate change.

The programme of events is now live and can be found here.

Although there is an emphasis on events with a climate focus, the events don’t only cater for those that are already interested or invested in climate change and climate action. There are a wide range of themes covered across the festival’s events, including food growing, energy, reducing waste, nature, arts and crafts, performance arts, fashion, cycling, science and innovation, community engagement, and much more.

Jonny Bennett, the Islands Development Officer with the North Highlands and Islands Climate Hub said:

“The Climate Festival has been a great opportunity for groups in Orkney to work together to shape the direction of the festival, but also to engage with their local communities and celebrate the great work they are doing. The Orkney Climate Festival also provides the opportunity to showcase not only the great climate action work that is occurring at local levels, but also Orkney-wide. Now that the events are finalised and the programme is finished, it would be great to see a lot of Orcadians out and about and involved between the 1st and 7th September.”

The Festival has been organised by the North Highlands & Islands Climate hub, which launched late in 2021 and aims to support community-led climate action in the North Highlands & Northern Isles in all the stages it takes to design, develop and deliver a project.
