Lesson 9: Real Life Example – Storm Floris

As well as increasing heatwaves, we’re also seeing increasing storms, with an intensity we’ve not witnessed before

A recent example of this was Storm Floris, which saw winds of up to 134mph (recorded in the Cairngorms) and more than 22000 Highland homes lost power.

Storms such as this bring issues like the temporary loss of public transport, with trains being cancelled and bus schedules stopped or reduced, and damage to infrastructure, such as train lines or buildings. There’s also the increased loss of life, whether this is out on dangerous roads or due to accidents and injuries during the storms themselves.

Another example from this year is Storm Eowyn, which was described as a ‘once in a generation’ storm. This saw 117000 homes across Scotland without electricity. The storm was so intense that both the Scottish Governments and Transport Scotland’s Resilience Rooms were activated (essentially an emergency coordination hub – think the war room scene in every Sci-Fi movie ever).
