Lesson 11: What changes can YOU make?

Britain’s homes and buildings are responsible for around 20% of the country’s carbon emissions.

Now, not every action will work for every household; some of these can definitely be costly or only possible for homeowners. And if you’re already paying for pet insurance, house insurance, life insurance, car insurance, energy bills, car fuel, nursery fees, mortgages... Well, you already know that money is tight!

But here are some of the biggest changes you can make:

  • Switch to a green energy supplier

  • Replace your gas boiler with a low-carbon option

  • Insulate walls, roofs and floors

  • Upgrade or adapt windows and doors

  • Draught-proof leaky areas

  • Swap to LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances

  • Think about whether we really need the heating on when it’s already 18 degrees outside

  • Be aware of your travel choices – can you take the bus, train or a bicycle?

  • Make more plant-based food choices
