Taking Action on Skye
Katy was thrilled to attend Dunvegan Community Trust’s survey for its Community Action Plan. The event brought together the community with a range of information stations to gather priorities. Catherine from Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre shared stories of local history, Katharine from Portree Library provided games children and Douglas from Community Enterprise shared his expertise on writing a community action plan.

HIEF
Grants of up to £15,000 are available for community-led projects aiming to protect or restore nature in the Highlands and Islands. The deadline to complete an Expression of Interest form is Monday 3rd March. The form, and full criteria, can be on found on the HIEF website. National Islands Plan

The Scottish Government’s Islands Team is leading conversations to develop Scotland's new National Islands Plan, due to be published later this year. Communities are invited along to an online session to review the impact of the first ever National Islands Plan and share their priorities to shape the next Plan. Register here.

Resolving the energy trilemma across Scottish Islands
Researchers have created a policy report exploring energy challenges on Scottish Islands and provided recommendations for future progress which benefits communities. The findings were complied from a workshop series during summer 2024. The report proposes building islands skills, decentralizing the grid and community benefits among others. Ullapool Unpacked CIC
Ullapool Unpacked CIC has just opened its full community refill shop in the centre of Ullapool. Their mission to reduce waste has been ongoing for 6 years so to finally have a permanent premises is a big milestone! The shop sells loose dried foods, herbs and spices, oils and vinegars, cleaning products, sustainable living items, and fresh produce. If you are in the area please do pop in! Find them here.

Boleskine House Orchard
Boleskine House are thrilled to announcement their plans to develop a community orchard! The orchard will provide free fruit annually to the local community, with the surplus donated to food banks. It’s hoped that the orchard will support the community, boost pollinator populations and reduce Boleskine’s carbon footprint. Planting is on 5/6 April for anyone who would like to come along and volunteer. Follow their progress.

Celebrating the HCWP
As the HCWP nears its conclusion it looks towards the future to share learning and inspire sustainable consumption in the Highlands. Watch out for their legacy video, a webinar series on partnerships and case studies. Visit their website to stay up to date.

USS Dolphin Spotting
The Ullapool Sea Savers have spotted dolphins about Wester Ross, unusual as normally they migrate south in winter months. These short beaked dolphins are are common in summer and the USS are starting to recognise individuals from their markings and behaviour! They’ve been reporting sightings to contribute to citizen science based data around the coast to document the importance of marine life.

Introducing Inverness Tool Library
Inverness Tool Library began 2025 with the unveiling of its new name and logo, and the award of Community Funding to run an 18-month pilot project. The Workshops and Collection Box project is a two-part undertaking that will enable ITL to facilitate a series of skill sharing workshops for those looking to improve their knowledge and ability to create things using tools for jobs around the home and garden. Climate Visuals offers an extensive library of climate imagery for organisations to share. Hosted by Climate Outreach, the imagery is based on research into how people perceive climate change. For our members, having access to these images may assist with marketing and communicating a range of climate issues. Register for free to access.
